Board of Directors
Boston’s Community Medical Group is structured as a consumer-governed organization, consistent with the philosophy and value system of the practice model. Commonwealth Care Alliance serves as Boston’s Community Medical Group’s Corporate Member. The Board of Directors of Boston’s Community Medical Group is comprised of outstanding individuals who provide expert guidance and represent a strong consumer voice to the organization. Paul Tupper - Paul earned his BA in 1984 at the University of Massachusetts/Boston majoring in Sociology. He began his career as a peer counselor at the Boston Center for Independent Living (BCIL) in 1985 and has held various management and administrative positions at BCIL from 1987 to 1991. Since 1991 Paul has worked in a variety of posts within the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). From 1991 to 2002 Paul was a planner in DPH’s Office on Health and Disability -- one of nine CDC funded, innovative state capacity building projects designed to conduct surveillance, survey research, primary prevention of disabilities, and prevention of secondary conditions for which adults with complex physical disabilities are at risk. His current post at DPH is in its Division for Perinatal, Early Childhood, & Children with Special Health Needs (DPECSHN). He conducts research in support of DPH’s Community Resource Help Line responding to the information and referral needs of families, children, and youth with special health care needs. Paul has been a member of the board since 2008. Elizabeth Casey - Liz Casey has been a disability activist for years, first with the Multiple Sclerosis Society and now with the Boston Center for Independent Living. At the MS Society in the 1990s, Liz initiated support groups and monthly educational workshops focusing on "A Healthy Approach to MS". She also participated in a variety of public service and educational videos for that organization. Liz has been a strong advocate for an improvement in personal care attendant benefits and wages, both with BCIL and now with 1199 SEIU. She sees this endeavor as a turning point in how we approach long-term care for disabled citizens and seniors. Formerly a reading teacher, Liz has continued to tutor elementary school students in her home, and participates in the Brookline Public School's program on "Understanding Disabilities". From 1984-2000, Liz volunteered on a twice weekly basis in the Boston and Brookline Public Schools, beginning reading programs for special-needs students. Recently Liz was hired as a Standardized Patient Educator by Tufts New England Medical School, were she will be training medical students in disability awareness. Her time is spent on the Governance Board of the MS Society and the Board of Boston’s Community Medical Group. Active in her community in Roslindale, she is the proud mother of a daughter who is attending UMass, Amherst. Staying involved and informed with world politics is a priority in her life. She very much looks forward to participation in the groundbreaking PCA Workforce Council. Sergio Goncalves - Sergio is committed to helping other individuals with disabilities live an independent and productive life. He serves on several boards including Project RIGHT, Quincy Geneva Housing Corporation, Greater Grove Hall Main Streets, Boston Center for Independent Living, and Commonwealth Care Alliance. He currently works full-time at the University of Massachusetts in Boston and is active in the community, working especially with disabled students. Sergio exemplifies perseverance and brings great vision to the board. Mary Glover - Please see Mary’s bio under About Us, Management Team Jack Grieco - Jack brings a unique perspective to the Board having sustained a spinal cord injury at the age of 14 when he and his brother were hit by a car. His injury in 1974 coincided with the creation of the independent living movement in Massachusetts, although he was not able to receive personal care attendant services at that time because of his age. He returned to high school and was the only wheelchair user in a student body of 3,000 at Braintree High School. After graduation, he attended Massasoit Community College. In 1979 he began his association with the Boston Center for Independent Living (BCIL) working as an Independent Living Skills Specialist for 3 years. From 1982-1990 he served as BCIL’s Housing Services Coordinator. He subsequently worked as a volunteer and served as a member of the Board of Trustees, officiating as Chair for 3 years. Jack founded the J Grieco Corp in 1982, a company providing transportation for mobility impaired individuals. In 1997, he was a co-founder of the New England Accessibility Center and served as the organization’s Financial Resources Coordinator. Jack organized BCIL’s highly successful and enjoyable 30th Anniversary Celebration held in 2004. Jack continues his work to improve the lives of people with disabilities by directing the Boston PCA Cooperative which he co-founded in 2002.
