Our History

Dr. Marie Feltin dedicated herself to the care of frail elders and people with disabilities. She was a founder of East Boston Community Health Center’s Home Care Program, The Urban Medical Group, and Boston’s Community Medical Group. She pioneered the model of physicians developing full partnership with nurse practitioners and physician assistants to bring primary care to patients in their homes and nursing homes. The practice that she created at Boston’s Community Medical Group reflects her philosophy of supporting independence and empowering individuals with disabilities to be active participants in their care. She saw home visiting, in part, as a way to break down the barriers of professionalism that existed between clinicians and the lives of their patients. Marie brought not only superior medical skills to her work but also a profound respect for her patients and a belief in their abilities.

Born in Nazi-occupied France and christened under an assumed name to hide her Jewish identity she came to Boston via Montreal. In her personal life, Marie was fun-loving and enjoyed dance, music, art, and scavenging at yard sales. A devoted mother, she shared her life with her husband, Dr. Robert Master until her death from brain cancer in 1994 at the age of 50. Boston’s Community Medical Group is committed to carrying on the work that she started and sustaining the values she embodied.
